Independence Day is right around the corner! It’s time to dig your favorite flag shirt out of the drawer, have the family over for a cookout, and of course, head to pick up some fireworks. Most would say it doesn’t feel like the Fourth of July without a fireworks show. Although did you know fireworks cause around 18,000 fires, 12,000 deaths, and several deaths each year? Celebrate the red, white, and blue with caution and safety in mind with these tips.
Let the Kiddos Watch
Children and teenagers should not be allowed to handle fireworks. Mom and dad should do the work, and the kiddos should sit back, relax, and watch. Lay a blanket down that will mark off the “safe” kiddo’s area. That way, the fireworks are away from the little ones, and they know where it’s safe to sit and enjoy the show.
Keep Water Close By
You never want to think worst-case scenario, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry. In case of an emergency, you should keep a bucket of water around at all times. It doesn’t hurt to have a fire extinguisher nearby as well.
Follow the Rules
Don’t try to be the cool neighbor on the block. If you cannot purchase specific kinds of fireworks in your state, they are not prohibited. Do your research before Independence Day to ensure the fireworks you are planning to use are legal in your area.
Protect Your Eyes
If you are the adult firework handler, don’t start lighting anything until you have protective eyewear on.

When Using Sparklers
Did you know sparklers burn at a whopping 2,000 degrees? If you think you don’t have to have your guard up with sparklers, think again. Do not wear any loose clothing when using sparklers, and do not put them near your eyes. Do not let a child under the age of five hold a sparkler. Anyone under the age of 18 should not use sparklers without adult supervision.
