Don’t Overlook Your Car’s Maintenance This Winter

Car Exhaust Pipe in Winter
Winter is coming – in fact, the first day of Winter is on December 21. We’ve already seen some cold weather this year, and with months of winter ahead of us, it’s important to make sure your car is ready, so don’t skip these winter vehicle preparations.

Protect the Exterior

The winter weather can be harsh on your car’s exterior, and so can all the grit and road salt that you might encounter this time of year. Leaving those contaminants on your paint can spoil your car’s good looks, so shield your vehicle from the elements with a protective layer of polymer wax. After any winter storms, you might also want to give your car a high-pressure wash to clean out any gritty buildup around the wheels or underbody. Whenever you park outside, you should leave your wiper blades raised as well, as this will keep them from freezing to the glass. To help them last longer, you should also avoid using the wipers to remove ice on your windshield. That’s a job for your ice scraper.

Check Your Tires

With icy weather ahead, traction is essential to safe driving. It’s important to make sure your tires have plenty of grip, so take a look at the tread to make sure there’s sufficient groove depth for safe driving. You might also want to swap your regular tires out for winter tires. Even if you don’t expect much snow this winter, we’ll still see plenty of cold days, and winter tires are ideal for driving when the temps drop below 45 degrees.

Top Off Your Tank

Sometimes, icy conditions can strand drivers when they least expect it, so you’ll need to be prepared in case winter weather catches you on the road. Keeping your tank at least half-full allows you to run the engine longer if you ever have to wait for assistance. Consider packing a car kit as well, and load up on essentials like warm clothing, a flashlight, batteries, and water.
